Sister Centers
To recognize and nurture the long history of close cooperation and friendship between Germany and North America, the DAAD has sponsored 7 Centers for German and European studies in the USA and Canada. Designated as “DAAD-Centers of Excellence,” each has its particular emphases and special projects. All of them, however, provide support for young academics, promote interdisciplinary and comparative teaching and research, offer opportunities for discussing German and European matters, foster German language instruction, and work to strengthen trans-Atlantic relations.
The Midwest’s Center for German & European Studies sister centers are:
- The BMW Center for German and European Studies at Georgetown University
- The Center for German and European Studies at Brandeis University
- The Institute for European Studies at the University of California, Berkeley
- The Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies at Harvard University
- The Canadian Centre for German and European Studies at the Université de Montréal and York
- The Joint Initiative in German and European Studies at the University of Toronto
Other DAAD-sponsored resources for the study of Germany and Europe in North America include the Institute for European Studies (IES) at the University of British Columbia, a sizable number of DAAD-Chairs and DAAD-Professorships at leading universities, as well as short-term lectureships.
